The National Transportation Safety Board coordinated with the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials to investigate November 16, 2017, rupture of Keystone Mainline number 1 crude oil pipeline operated by TransCanada Oil Operations, Incorporated. resulted from a fatigue crack that initiated near-surface cracks associated sliding contact damage at top pipe propagated failure within 7.4 years operation. surface was characterized photography, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, metallography, dimensional analyses, findings indicated produced steel component likely vehicle used during original construction after positioned in trench.
